Stop everything and add these five things to your self-care to-do list.

We sat down with Gracyn Chittenden, a nail tech and trainer, to discuss her advice for keeping nails healthy and strong. Here are her top-five insider tips:

1. Don’t bite or pick your nails

We know this is much easier said than done. Many clients tell us they get gel nails BECAUSE they often bite or pick their nails. Try your best to leave your nails alone and get gel properly removed to keep your cuticle and nail intact.

2. Don’t use your nails as tools

Bottle openers exist for a reason - use them! Don’t use your nails to open cans, tighten screws, remove stickers, etc. This wear and tear usually leads to chipping or breaking.

3. Wear gloves

Chemicals used in cleaning products are harsh on your skin and nails, so it’s vital to protect your hands by wearing gloves. To prevent breakage, it’s a good idea to wear gloves when submerging your hands in water, such as when cleaning the dishes, since nails become brittle when wet.

4. Use cuticle oil

Cuticle oil is your nail’s best friend. Cuticle oil moisturizes the skin around your nails, fixing and avoiding dry, cracked nails and painful hangnails. Additionally, cuticle oil adds an extra barrier on top of your nail to protect it from damage. P.S. We created a life-changing cuticle oil you can purchase on our website.

5. Take a vitamin supplement

If your nails are brittle or tend to split, taking a vitamin supplement, like Biotin, will help them grow stronger. Check out the seven best vitamins for healthy nails according to Healthline to learn more.
